Traverse Wall®: Sierra Vista Junior High School Fitness Center
(Canyon Country, CA)
George Velarde,
Sierra Vista’s Physical Education Department
Chair, incorporated a 10' x 40' Standard Traverse Wall that features
several overhanging panels when his school built its new Fitness
Center. He knew that this climbing wall would help to achieve the
vision and goals of their “New Physical Education” program.
This program emphasizes inclusion and personal fitness. Student
scores on state fitness tests have documented the program’s
success. “Over the last five years, our fitness scores have
improved in every category of the state fitness scores,” Velarde
said. “More importantly, our fitness scores are higher than
the state average.” Sierra Vista Junior High School was recently
recognized by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness
and Sports and the President’s Challenge as a Physical Activity
and Fitness Demonstration Center.

Relief-Feature
Combi Wall: St. Louis Park Junior High School (St. Louis Park,
MN)
This school wanted a climbing wall that would engage and challenge
students of diverse fitness levels. Their Combi Wall combines horizontal
and vertical climbing with an 8' x 40' Traverse Wall and a 20'
x 26' Top Rope Wall. Students traverse, or climb horizontally,
on the Traverse Wall portion of the project. When ready for additional
challenges and the development of trust, positive risk taking and
advanced problem solving, students move onto the Top Rope Climbing
Wall. It is constructed with Relief-Feature panels that have rock-like
characteristics. These features can be used along with the handholds
to climb the wall, providing additional differentiation.

Superior
Rock Traverse Wall®: St. Leo the Great Catholic School (Fairfax,
VA)
Scott Allen, the physical educator for this school, wanted
a climbing wall that resembled real rock. Everlast Climbing
Industries’ Superior
Rock panel offers that natural look since the climbing wall panels
are molded from rock along the north shore of Lake Superior. The
8'x 40' Traverse Wall includes custom-color mats and our patent-pending
Mat Locking System to prevent unsupervised climbing. Mr. Allen
says, “Our climbing wall is the most enjoyable piece of
equipment the students have used and there has a been a noticeable
increase
in their fitness levels. The kids are having a blast!”

Magna® Relief-Feature
Traverse Wall®: Buffalo Community Middle School (Buffalo, MN)
Bringing
climbing challenges and cross-curricular opportunities together
in one climbing wall was the goal for this project. It
was achieved through innovative wall panels and the addition
of an overhanging feature. This school’s climbing wall not only
includes rock-like features on its surface that can be used for
climbing, but also has an overhanging portion that offers an advanced
climbing challenge. The magnet-accepting surface enables students
to place magnetic numbers and letters while participating in math,
language arts or other cross-curricular activities.

Magna® Top Rope Climbing Wall: The Boys and Girls Club of the Northland
(Duluth, MN)
The showpiece
of the new facility is a 20’ x 28’ Sculpted
Magna® Tope Rope Climbing Wall. It features seven top-rope
stations, allowing for 21 participants at one time—seven
climbers and 14 belayers.
A variety of
engaging games and learning activities can be hosted on the wall’s
patented magna surface which accepts magnetic numbers and letters
that are included with the wall package. The
roof and overhanging features differentiate the wall surface and
provide additional challenges for advanced climbers.
In addition to their positive acclaim about the wall, the Boys
and Girls Club staff also reported that they benefited greatly
from the educational on-site training that accompanied their purchase.

Traverse Wall®: Woodlawn Elementary School (Schenectady,
NY)
As
the result of school wide and community efforts, Woodlawn Elementary
School raised $11,350 for a new 57 foot climbing wall which will
be used for physical education classes and the recess program.
The traverse climbing wall is named in memory of Alphonso Hilton
Jr., a Schenectady School supporter, outdoorsman and rock collector.
The
project, spearheaded by Woodlawn physical education teacher,
Teresa Brown, is the result of many fundraisers, grant applications
and fierce determination. The students sold candy, held a fundraiser
dance and a garage sale. MVP donated $2,000 for the new wall
and Wal-Mart donated $1,000. Other donations came from family
and friends
including Bertha and Alphonso Hilton who had seven children
who
attended Schenectady Schools and currently have twin grandsons
attending Woodlawn. The wall is dedicated in memory of the
Hilton's son, Alphonso Hilton Jr.
"The
benefits of the wall are endless," said Ms. Brown. “They
include fitness, strength-building, confidence- building, balance,
coordination, trust, teamwork, cooperation, problem-solving,
risk-taking, communication, courage-building, patience-building,
endurance-building,
and leadership just to name a few.”
